    Formed in 2013, Pawn Shop Soul found its roots in instrumental favorites from England’s Northern Soul scene. Featuring a four-horn frontline, this ten-piece band proves that the horn and organ trios/bands of the mid-to-late 60’s funk/soul jazz scene are still just as important today as they were back then.

    Simone Cox
    Raised in a musical family, Simone started out singing and playing organ in church in home town Columbus, Georgia. Simone’s father, choir director and jazz saxophonist Ed Cox, mentored the young Simone. Outside of church, Simone was surrounded by musicians rehearsing in her childhood home. Simone explains, “It was jazz all the time at home. So as a singer, I was emulating the vocal styles of Nancy Wilson, Carmen McRae, and Dinah Washington.” This release signals a return to her roots, finding inspiration in two talented musicians and strong women, Barbara Lynn and fellow Afro-Filipina, Sugar Pie DeSanto. As Simone puts it, “I'm really grateful to have the opportunity to perform this music and lend my interpretation to these great songs.” Mr. Cox would be proud!

Founded in 2013 by veteran soul, funk, and jazz musicians, Pawn Shop Soul features a full horn line not often heard in this millennium. The horn front line stands and delivers on the powerful grooves generated by a five-piece rhythm section. An orchestra of soul all by itself, Hammond B3 both sustains the groove and soars above it. Booty bumpin’ bio-rhythms are supplied by inter-locking traps, bass and congas. Satisfying body and soul, Pawn Shop Soul provides high-energy dance music in the tradition of artists from Stax, Volt, Chess and many others.
